Why You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen This Summer

The Australian Summer is here and with bikini season a bronzed, tanned glow is at the top of our wish list. But unfortunately achieving a bronzed look can be an anti-aging nightmare.

We all know the dangers of sun exposure. Damaging UV rays can lead to things such as skin cancer, hyperpigmentation like sunspots and irreparable aging to our skin caused by deeply penetrating UV rays.

What Does The Sun Do To Our Skin?

Excessive sun exposure increases the rate that collagen and elastin are broken down. Which means it takes longer for the skin to repair and renew itself. The more severe and deeper the damage to the skin, the more disastrous the aging effect. UVA breaks down the collagen in the skin, plus restricts the production of free-radical fighting antioxidant Vitamin A.

Some professionals call it  “oxidative stress” – the point where our network of antioxidants are overloaded by UV light and unable to do their job. Without Vitamin A to protect the skin from an attack of UV and assist in the quick repair of damaged skin cells, skin becomes thinner and those penetrative UV rays continue to break down skin-firming collagen, leaving it more wrinkled and less plump.

Protect Your Skin And Prevent Premature Aging

Our skin is delicate and by spending a Summer day lying in the sun, you’re risking harmful and irreversible damage. Tanning increased your risk of not only skin cancer but also visible aging on your skin. Fine lines and wrinkles, thinning skin plus age spots and freckles are all caused by excessive sun exposure.

Heading outside without sunscreen means having no defence against those powerful UV rays that break down collagen. There is a reason that mature women with younger looking skin always say to wear sunscreen. Research has proven it!

A recent study showed that those who religiously wear sunscreen everyday age a full 24% less than those who choose to wear sunscreen occasionally!

The study went for over four years and reviewed the visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, rough patches, sagging skin, and skin discolouration. The researchers confirmed that the anti-aging benefits of applying abroad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is vital to prevent the sun from aging the skin.

As well as regularly applying sunscreen during the day, wear a wide brim hat and some light clothing, and put on some sunglasses. And to protect your skin, avoid the sun at its harshest, and stay under the sun umbrella between 10am and 2pm.

Practice Safe Tanning

Most of us know this by now but please avoid tanning beds.

Solariums release extremely concentrated harmful amounts of UV rays and are not a safe way to tan. This Summer instead go for a spray tan or DIY your tan with bottle products, for a golden glow that won’t age you.

Being sun savvy this Summer to ensure your naturally enjoy firmer, smoother skin with fewer wrinkles. Our skin is fragile and with a loss of collagen and elastin will droop and sag.
